Emergency Info

If you have an orthodontic emergency that you feel uneasy about and cannot resolve on your own, give one of our offices in San Antonio or Schertz a call. Our staff and orthodontists will be happy to help you, and answer any questions you may have. Keeping that in mind, the truth is that there are very few true orthodontic emergencies. Most common orthodontic issues can be remedied at home with simple solutions.

Broken Brackets or Wires

If you break any of your braces, call our office as soon as possible. Please do not come directly to the office—by calling us, you will allow our team the opportunity to create a scheduled time for the doctor to see you. Even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, call us immediately to notify us if you need a bracket or wire repaired, or if you need another orthodontic treatment. Our orthodontists will decide the correct treatment for you at the time of your visit.

Loose Brackets or Wires

If a bracket or wire becomes loose on your braces, call our office immediately for advice. The bracket may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Call our office the next business day so that we may schedule a follow up appointment for you.

Wire Irritations

Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or an eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire causes you pain, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you cannot resolve the wire irritation, call our office to make an appointment.

Lost Separators

Most patients lose a separator during their orthodontic treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call one of our offices to see if it needs to be replaced.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment

You will likely feel some minor pain, soreness, or discomfort during the first week after getting braces, and after any routine adjustments have been made at follow up appointments. Routine adjustments typically involve tightening your braces. You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces or newly tightened braces. A warm washcloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaw. If pain exceeds a mild or moderate level, please call our office. It is our goal to deliver a relatively pain free experience.
