Are You a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?

Are You a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners have become a popular orthodontic option for patients who want a more discreet way to straighten their teeth. But while they work beautifully for some, they aren’t the right choice for everyone.

At South Texas Orthodontics, we believe the best treatment is the one that delivers lasting results, not just convenience.

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays designed to gradually move teeth into proper alignment. They are:

  • Nearly invisible
  • Removable for eating and brushing
  • Often appealing to teens and adults

Who Is Typically a Good Candidate?

Clear aligners tend to work best for:

  • Mild to moderate crowding or spacing
  • Minor bite issues
  • Patients who can wear aligners 20–22 hours per day
  • Responsible teens and adults

Parents often appreciate aligners for teens who are motivated and organized, while adults value their flexibility and appearance.

When Braces May Be the Better Option

Traditional braces may be recommended for more complex alignment or bite issues, significant jaw correction and/or patients who may struggle with wearing aligners consistently. In these cases, braces can offer greater control and efficiency.

Clear Aligners for Teens vs Adults

  • Teens: Aligners can be effective when compliance is strong, but growth and habits are carefully considered.
  • Adults: Clear aligners are a popular choice for busy professionals and parents seeking a subtle treatment option.

Lifestyle Matters

Clear aligners require commitment. Without proper wear, treatment progress can stall. Patients must remember to:

  • Remove aligners only for eating and drinking
  • Clean aligners properly
  • Wear them consistently every day

During your consultation at South Texas Orthodontics, we evaluate tooth alignment, bite function, jaw development, lifestyle, and preferences. From there, we recommend the option that best supports long-term oral health and stability.
