Top Mistakes Braces Patients Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Getting braces is a big step toward a healthier, more confident smile, but how patients care for their braces during treatment makes a huge difference in results, comfort, and timing.

At South Texas Orthodontics, we see many of the same issues come up repeatedly. The good news? Most common mistakes are easy to avoid with a little awareness.

1. Skipping or Rushing Oral Hygiene

Braces create extra spaces where food and plaque can hide. When brushing and flossing aren’t thorough, patients may experience white spots or staining around brackets, cavities or gum inflammation or bleeding.

For parents: Kids and teens often need reminders and supervision, especially early in treatment.

For adults: Busy schedules can make it tempting to rush, but consistency matters.

2. Eating Foods That Can Damage Braces

Hard, sticky, or chewy foods are one of the most common causes of broken brackets and wires. This includes:

  • Popcorn
  • Hard candy
  • Ice
  • Sticky sweets
  • Chewy breads

3. Missing or Delaying Appointments

Orthodontic treatment relies on carefully timed adjustments. Missing appointments can slow progress, lead to discomfort, and cause treatment plans to fall off schedule. Keeping regular visits helps ensure treatment stays efficient and predictable.

4. Not Following Instructions (Elastics, Aligners, or Appliances)

Whether it’s rubber bands, aligners, or other appliances, compliance plays a huge role in success.

Not wearing elastics or aligners as directed can delay results, affect bite correction and increase overall treatment time. This applies to kids, teens and adults alike.

How to Set Yourself (or Your Child) Up for Success

  • Maintain excellent daily hygiene
  • Stick to braces-friendly foods
  • Keep scheduled appointments
  • Follow instructions closely
  • Communicate concerns early

At South Texas Orthodontics, our team works closely with families and adult patients to help treatment stay on track and finish on time.
