Is This an Orthodontic Emergency? What to Do and When to Call

When something feels wrong with braces or aligners, it can be stressful — especially for parents trying to decide if something needs immediate attention. The good news is that most orthodontic issues are not true emergencies, and many can be managed safely at home until your next appointment.

At South Texas Orthodontics, we want patients and parents to feel confident knowing what’s normal, what’s urgent, and what steps to take.

What Is Considered an Orthodontic Emergency?

A true orthodontic emergency typically involves pain, injury, swelling, or risk of infection — not just inconvenience or discomfort.

You should contact our office right away if there is:

  • Significant pain that doesn’t improve
  • Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop
  • Trauma to the mouth or face affecting braces or teeth
  • A broken appliance that is causing injury

These situations may require prompt care to prevent further complications.

Common Orthodontic Issues (That Usually Aren’t Emergencies)

Many of the most common problems we hear about can safely wait for a scheduled visit:

  • Loose or broken brackets
  • Poking or shifted wires
  • Lost elastic bands
  • Discomfort after adjustments
  • Aligners that feel tight or uncomfortable

While these issues can be annoying, especially for kids, they are rarely dangerous.

How to Manage Common Issues at Home

Parents and adult patients can often provide temporary relief with a few simple steps:

  • Orthodontic wax to cover sharp or poking areas
  • Warm saltwater rinses to soothe irritated gums
  • Clean nail clippers to trim a protruding wire if advised
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers, as directed

Clear Aligners: Are Emergencies Different?

Clear aligner patients may experience:

  • Cracked or lost aligners
  • Sudden discomfort

In many cases, patients can temporarily move to the previous aligner or contact our office for guidance.

When in Doubt, Call Us

If you’re unsure whether something is an emergency, it’s always okay to call and ask. Our team at South Texas Orthodontics is happy to help determine next steps and provide peace of mind.
